Who we are
Firealert is run by Firealert (Pty) Ltd (registration number 2026/000000/07), 1 Demo Street, Sandton, Johannesburg, 2196, South Africa. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean Firealert (Pty) Ltd.
Firealert monitors fire alarms in vehicles and buildings. A device in each vehicle or building reports to us over the mobile network. We alert the customer’s team, and we can pass fire, smoke and panic alarms to the fire department that covers the area.
For our own customers and users, we are the responsible party under POPIA. When a customer adds people to their account, such as the contacts on an escalation ladder, the customer decides how that information is used. We process it on the customer’s behalf.
Our Information Officer
Our Information Officer makes sure we handle personal information lawfully. You can reach them at hello@firemobile.dev or by post at 1 Demo Street, Sandton, Johannesburg, 2196, South Africa.
What we collect
- Account details. Names, email addresses, phone numbers, your organisation, your role and your sign-in details. This includes fire department staff who use the station console.
- Device telemetry and GPS position. Alarm states, temperature, battery level, mobile signal strength and the position of each monitored vehicle or building. A vehicle’s position can show where its driver is, so we treat it as personal information.
- Alarm and incident records. What happened, when and where, who was alerted, who acknowledged the alarm and when, and any notes added afterwards.
- Contacts that customers add. Names, phone numbers, email addresses and roles of the people on an escalation ladder, and the owner and contact details on an asset’s fire-service card or pre-incident plan.
- App push tokens. A code that Apple or Google gives the Firealert mobile app, so we can send notifications to your phone.
- Billing details. The details we need to invoice you and keep tax records.
- Messages you send us. Emails, calls and support requests.
Why we collect it
- To provide Firealert under our agreement with the customer: monitoring devices, sending alarms and escalating until someone acknowledges.
- To help protect people and property, by forwarding fire, smoke and panic alarms to the responsible fire department.
- To run accounts, give support, send invoices and collect payment.
- To keep the service secure, find faults and improve how it works.
- To meet our legal obligations, such as tax and record-keeping laws.
- To send marketing, but only if you have said yes (see below).
We only collect what we need for these purposes, and we don’t use it for anything unrelated without telling you first.
Who we share it with
Fire departments
This is central to the service. When a fire, smoke or panic alarm is forwarded, the responsible fire department’s station console receives the asset’s live position, the owner’s details, the contacts and the pre-incident plan. The fire department uses this information to respond to the alarm.
Service providers
We use other companies to host the service, send email and deliver push notifications, and later to send SMS messages. They may only use personal information on our instructions, and they must keep it secure under a written agreement.
Others
Users in the same customer account can see that account’s assets, alarms and contacts. We may also share information when the law requires it, or when it is needed to protect someone’s life or safety. We don’t sell personal information.
Sending information outside South Africa
Some of our service providers store or process information outside South Africa. We only send personal information across the border when POPIA allows it. For example, when the recipient is bound by laws or a binding agreement that protect it as well as POPIA does, or when the transfer is needed to provide the service you asked for.
How long we keep it
We keep personal information while your account is active and for as long as we need it for the purposes above. The history you can see in the apps depends on your plan. When an account closes, we delete or anonymise its information within a reasonable time, unless the law requires us to keep it longer, as with tax records.
How we protect it
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal information. These include encrypted connections, access controls and limiting staff access to what each person needs. If we believe someone has accessed personal information without permission, we will tell the Information Regulator and the people affected, as POPIA requires.
Your rights
Under POPIA you have the right to:
- ask whether we hold personal information about you, and for a copy of it;
- ask us to correct information that is wrong, out of date or incomplete;
- ask us to delete information we no longer have a lawful reason to keep;
- object to us using your information, including for direct marketing;
- withdraw consent you have given us, at any time; and
- complain to the Information Regulator at inforegulator.org.za.
To use these rights, email our Information Officer at hello@firemobile.dev. We may need to confirm who you are first. If a customer added your details, for example as a contact on their escalation ladder, we may also pass your request to that customer.
Marketing
We only send marketing if you opt in. Every marketing email has a link to unsubscribe, and you can also ask us to stop at any time. Alarms, billing and security messages are part of the service, not marketing.
Children
Firealert is for organisations and adults. It is not meant for children under 18, and we don’t knowingly collect their personal information.
This website
This marketing website uses no cookies and no third-party trackers. To understand how it is used, it counts page views, how far pages are scrolled and which contact buttons are pressed, together with the site that referred you, any campaign tags in the link (such as utm_source) and whether you are on a phone, tablet or computer. Your browser keeps a random identifier in local storage so we can tell visits apart without knowing who you are. We don’t record your IP address or your full browser details, and we delete this information after 13 months.
If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, the website sends nothing. The website also remembers whether you chose light or dark mode; that setting stays on your device. You can clear both in your browser settings at any time.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Firealert changes. We’ll post the new version here and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we’ll also tell customers by email.
